Hard To Get

The Bush campaign, with a deft knack for timing, has chosen the event of Kerry's announcement of his choice of John Edwards as his running mate to release a campaign ad entitled, "First Choice" which attempts to play up the fact that Kerry had made overtures to John McCain before settling on Edwards. But as Dan Froomkin notes in today's column, apparently Kerry wasn't the only presidential candidate rebuffed by the maverick Senator from Arizona:

"George Bush asked me in 2000 if I was interested in being vice president. I said no. I wasn't interested then and I'm not interested now." John McCain, March 2004.
